This painting is one of several I created early this year, as part of the group project called ''Naked Jazz'', intended to lead to a group show at the Montreal Jazz Fest 2017. The idea is to paint live models with musical instruments, in such a way as to embody the spirit of Jazz. This particular work was painted with a model sitting , loosely holding a saxophone. The distinct, irregular brush strokes with a limited palette , as well as the selective definition of the figure, are meant to evoke certain emotional effects of Jazz.

Sometimes, rather than having the model coming to my studio, I go to the model's place. This allows me to create a painting inspired by her true surroundings, which , in turn, enhances the authenticity of the work. This painting, ''Late Night Tea'', was entirely created at the model's apartment, in her bedroom. The mirror lent itself to a composition with double images. And since she let me know that she usually had tea late in the evening, I had the idea of positioning her in front of the mirror, pouring tea into a cup. The red background, for which I mainly used dioxide red, added a warm yet subdued glow to this sensual, intimate moment.

Last night, on May 4th, 2017, I was on my way to a classical still life. As I laid down the initial sketch and colors, I found the painting already interesting even before the form and volume definition, before the light and dark contrast. I decided to take a new direction. I let the painting have its way. I have tried cubism and abstract art in the past, but last night was the very first time, I was able to step back, look at what I did, and decide it was worthwhile.
